Default Digital Camera Folks

http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Fujif...oductDetail.do

I've got a bonus check coming up that I'm fairly certain my wife has forgotten about it. She's pretty damned handy with a camera, and she's wanting a nice digital. I know NOTHING about cameras, hell I can't even take a decent picture to save my life.

So I'm fairly certain one or two of our resident Spyder experts are also amatuer photographers, so let me know if that's a respectable camers or not. I've done a LITTLE research, and I think it's a good one.

Any input from those in the know would be greatly appreciated.

looks good ... especially since it has 10x optical...(don't bother with digital zoom).

and it's cheap too. the only thing is since it's designed like a SLR camera it would be alittle bulky (if that's not a problem for your wife then go on and get it)

the reviews says it's ok given that it's just $399, i don't know much about reliability, but as long as you don't get an Olympus you're pretty safe.

taken from the review:

Likes
– Produces rich vibrant color tones
– Sharp lens
– Reasonable control of noise
– Writes RAW files
– ISO 800 and 1600 settings offer an advantage in low light
– Comfortable grip
– Flash pops up automatically
– AF assist light reaches a long way
Dislikes
- No live histogram
- Slow performance speeds
- Live viewfinder does not show exposure or white balance
- Manual controls aren't convenient (hidden within menus)
- Viewfinder and LCD don't have enough resolution
- No Image Stabilization

if she uses the histogram though don't get this. since it doesn't have any while you're actully taking the pic.

Get a Canon or a Nikon. The 300d is a nice camer, or a rebel. D50's and d70's are also nice Nikon cameras. Those are all SLR's and will probably run you a pretty penny, but all worth it. I personally like film photography. But if I had the money to buy a nice digital, I would.

Baller, does she already have an SLR type camera that you are replacing? Or is it just a camera you looked at and liked. I have a few different cameras that I use depending on where and what I am doing.

An SLR will give you the best results and features, but it is not pocket-able. So if you wife likes to take pictures all the time and everywhere then you may want to consider one of the pocket cameras out there. I am currently using the Kodak V550 as my take with me camera. It has enough features to make the average user happy and is durable. My SLR type camera is a Minolta Dimage. I use that one because it has the fastest auto focus on the market and with a small child that was 100% necessary.

Fuji makes good cameras, but one thing to consider is the memory format the camera uses. Fuji uses xd cards. If you have nothing else that uses memory it is not a big deal. I have 4 cameras and 2 pdas that all use sd cards so for me if got a camera that uses xd I would need to buy a whole new set of cards.

other things to consider. If your wife likes to dabble in Photoshop, the Fuji you selected can shoot photos in RAW format. The images are much larger, but once in PS they can be worked with better, more control. And I like to use Photoshop, and that is one thing I wish I had.

Well that was enough from me for now. Hope that helps and is not toooo confusing.

My wife has a decent "everywhere" camera that she likes. It's compact, pocketable, and meets the "hey i want a pic of that" requirements.

I'm not too worried about the memory format, if I did have several different items that required memory sticks, I would be concerned. But this is camera will be one of two items we own that requires a memory stick.

The main reason I want to get my wife this camera, is because she's a grphic designer. She loves to play around with Photoshop and Illustrator. She's often complaining about the image quality of her "pocketable" camera. She wants to have something with which she can take her own high quality photos, instead of searching around stock image sites for hours trying to find the right high res image.
