The article stated that the it has to orbit a star, but not be a star itself. So no planets can be stars, unless I read it wrong.

why not build a planet free of earthbound disasters... and maybe give it a giant laser or device that eliminates life from all stretches of the universe... that seems to be what everyone else is doing.

These are not planets at all, guys... these are called planetoids. They are tiny planets, nothing more. They have known of them for a while now, and are just getting around to naming them. Another name, a misnomer, for them is "plutoids" as they are smaller than Pluto. Don't get all excited over these pebbles in the space-time continuum.
