Which company model is rather subjective to the purpose of the shotgun and how much you want to spend.
You want a good cheap boomstick just because, go with a Remington870 or Mossberg500. You want an awesome competition shooting or hunting shotgun, get a Beretta Extrema2.

Ya, just like paintball markers it all depends on how much you plan to spend, what you want to use it for and what type of quality you want. I have a Mossy 590 9 shot riot. It fit the bill for what I wanted and was relatively inexpensive. Not exactly the shotgun you'd use for deer hunting but it shoots bri and 00 very well with the cylinder bore. That's anothing you need to consider, the bore -

Remington - 870 and 1300 are standard issue police models. What does this tell you? They are equally suitable for hunting/defense. Winchester - meh...teheir rifles are way better than their shotguns. Mossberg - depends on the model you get. Field grades are pretty good but the models 500 and similar styles are cheaply made, have gritty actions, have horribly inaccurate sights... other (clarify) - Benelli is an expensive shotgun but very top shelf.

IMO, do it like any other firearm: find a nearby shotgun-specific shooting range and see if they have rentals for shotguns. Hopefully they will, but if not, take a stroll around and talk with locals about their firearms and how they like them, as well as seeing if you could hold them for a minute to insure a good fit. Find the most likely candidate from that and research, research, RESEARCH! Find out all the maintenence for that particular model, and read the manual at least twice. If you do not comprehend any of what the manual states, read it until you understand it or ask someone. If at last you decide that it is a suitible firearm, then go out to a local gun show and pick one up. Be sure to follow ALL firearm laws in your city/county/state and do not take any short-cuts to getting the firearm.
I personally have had experience with Mossberg shotguns, and I loved the few I was allowed to fire. Great patterns with it, and the action was as smooth as warm butta'. Accuracy was about as accurate as you can get with a shotgun, as the owner had equipped his with a red-dot sight....Great cheap little bit of plastic, and I still am in love with the ease of aiming with one!
