I went to the local store to get my co2 tank filled and they said my tank has expired.... this suprised me, since I've gotten the tank filled at many different stores recently, and the expiration date that he explained to me is over two years past due.
THEN he told me the reason for the expiration dates on the tanks has something to do with the hydro in the tank get old old losing it's charge. isn't hydro only in compressed air tanks, not co2? Is there actually an expiration date on co2 tanks? |

yes. The stamping under the neck has a date. you can read about Hydro information by clicking this link...
http://www.hydrotester.com/Testdateindex.htm but it's a CO2 tank and relatively cheap. You are better off buying a new tank and scavange the old valve so you have a spare (parts kit). They're less than $30 for a 20 oz at most places

I think it depends where you go, and how many you have Hydrostatically tested. If I remember correctly, my field sent out some tanks to be tested for about 30 bucks a tank. I'm sure if you go to your local field, they can direct you to the nearest place, or even if you call up a local fire department to find out where they get thier tanks hydro tested.
But if you do end up taking off the old valve from the tank that is now past its D.O.T date, make sure its COMPLETELY EMPTY ( I know you probably know this, but you can never be too careful when dealing with air cylinders/canistars/tanks.)

I believe there is a website that you can send your tanks too directly. I thought it was about $16 plus shipping. IMO I would just buy a new tank before I hydroed a co2 tank.
