I've never owned one but I tink it's to make the bolt cycle faster without using as much air.

Well, I have one in my ION.. And this is going to sound stupid, but I really don't know EXACTLY how it works.... Lol.. But here is my thought... I know it releases the excess air after firing closer to the front of the bolt, rather than the back... But, I really don't know how that allows you to lower your dwell...

It allows built up air pressure to release faster.

examples:

Ion:
Pressure remains in the firing chamber as the bolt trys to move back. On a stock ion it is released down at the solenoid, so the pressure has to travel down the hose and exit out the back of the solenoid before the bolt can be moved back and fired once again. With a qev in place the air is released right off the firing chamber, which means the time between cycles is now faster. Dwell being the amount of time there is between cycles can now be lowered because the the bolt can now cycle faster.

autococker:

The qevs are placed on the ram. As the ram moves forward there might be some pressure left over from when it was moved backward, same if it was the other way around. With the qevs in place the left over pressure is now allowed to exit, which the opposing force is now eliminated. This makes the ram cycle faster.

the ion vents from the solenoid, venting pressure at a closer area makes the teavel time less, decreasign the cycle tyme.

QEV = Quick Exhaust Valve, basically, it releases any pressurized air where from where it doesn't need to be, much faster than it normally would. These places on an Ion and an Autococker are places that are speed-limited because of this pressure. Thus, the QEV will release the pressure as soon as it's not needed, and thus it allows the marker to cycle faster.
