if you buy upgrades i'd buy used because you'll end up putting a lot of money into it. a clamping feedneck is a must an electronic frame is alwasy nice too but you need to make sure that your hopper can keep up with it

if you plan on spending more than $100 on upgrades, you might as well get a new gun.

Depends, if you want a milsim gun (which it seems lie you may based on the a5) a tippman will serve you well, or a Tiberius, or a BT, or even the MR4.

Awww, but guys, you're forgetting the most important thing - upgrading a spyder is one of the best things about owning a spyder. Remember dumping all the money into your old spyder and showing it off at the field? One of my fondest memories of paintballing back then...
If youve got the money, time and want to, upgrade your Spyder. Do so modifications, change the body some and enjoy the snot out of it!

new guns are just so much more advanced than old mech spyders (except tippmans are pretty much the same as always) if i bought a new gun i'd buy a new electro spyder

of course they are, but a timmy is more advanced than a spimmy and people still build those. Believe it or not, there's more to the sport and gun collecting than getting the "much more advanced" guns. And to this day, I still have had more fun with my Super Sonix maxed out Sonix back in the day than I ever did with any of my much more advanced guns...the awe factor is especially fun!
