Your family is really lucky to have someone to guide them through their ancestry, my one side has kept track of where we're from, but my mother's side hasn't been as good, I only have my Grand-parents to go by. My fiance has it worse, her father was adopted, the agency he was given to tracked down his parents but they wished to stay anonymous.

The sporran is looking good too. It matches the dirk quite well.

Well, 'dirk' in it's literal term of "fixed blade weapon" but this is actually a Sgian Dubh - or "black knife" (hidden knife, in a black-ops kind of way). This is the one you see in our hose (socks).
A Dirk - or more directly, a Scottish Dirk - is a short sword modeled after the Bullock dagger. The Scot Dirk has an approximately 13" blade, is commonly single edged but could be double edged if the blade is triangular, may or may not have fullers and may or may not have Jimping on the spine of the single-edged blade.
