Default Looks like I'm going to have to wait...

I went to San Diego yesterday. The head of the transplant department called the Friday after I turned down the lungs and said he wanted to see me. As I thought would happed, they took me off the list. Not because I turned down the lungs, just because I'm too health right now to justify the risk. As he said, He could give me lungs now and I could live 10 years and that would be good. With my health the way it is, I could go 5 years before I really need lungs, then I could get transplanted and live 10 years which would be better. They are going to continue to follow me but I will only need to go out there ever 6 months, that way if my numbers start to drop, they can get me back on the list.

Wow. Good news and bad news all wrapped up in one. One one hand, it's great to hear that you are healthy (mostly), but it also sucks that you're off the list.

Regardless, my wife and I talk about it sometimes, you're in my thoughts and her prayers. Just out of curiosity, what type of match does a donor have to be to donate lungs? I've always wondered about that.

To match they look at blood type, lung size, donor age, stuff like that. I know they look at tissue samples under microscopes to make sure they are okay.

I did find out that the lungs they were going to give me were from a 15 year old. The doctor actually said he was happy I didn't take them.

Wait, so the doctor is telling you that you will live for 15 years more if it goes as planned?

I did not know it was this bad if so.. I am sorry to hear that.

I don't think he was telling me I have 15 years left. I think he just used those numbers as examples. Lung transplants are the riskiest transplants. The national average survival rate at 1 year is 84%, then decreases to 63% at 3 years and 48% at 5 years. So that means I have a 48% chance of making it 5 years after transplant. That being said, I met a 70 year old lady who had a transplant and was 16 years out. Technology and medicine gets better and better every day. So hopefully those numbers will go up and be way better by the time I'm ready for lungs.

Thats what I'm praying for.

God willing, in a few years, when you need it, the technology will be there to let you live to a ripe old age.

In five years technology could advance by a lot. Even now, doctors are using robots that they control for stuff like that.
