now, for aircraft carriers and the like, wouldn't it need to be a line of sight thing? like, light doesn't bend or arc like a missile would, so would it not be somewhat of a 'show' thing, as most targets would not be in direct vision of an aircraft carrier, even if it is 5 miles away

edit: misread aircraft to be aircraft carrier, but the point still stands

Actually. Light can bend, depending on how high it was fired from, and what particles are in the air, it can bend up to 360*, so the military could shoot up gas bags that silently let the gas out, with the right mixture, they could shoot it at say a 45* angle to clear tree's, and refract it off the gas cloud, causing it to hit whatever was on the other side, although the other thing is tho, is that they cant see whats on the other side, and a quarter size beam isnt too big.
