The idea behind the hand in front of the lens is that if you have it there, you're more likely to get a bounce off the hand on a long run than you are getting shot in the lens. It does work. I've been bounced plenty of times playing pump against semi and having my hand there saved me. Timm and I were doing it there because we were running 35 and 40 off break.
