Personally a kit would be the best - that way you can match your paint a lot easier. I don't know the kits that are available at the moment, but back when I was playing the Freak, Pepperstik, JT Edge, UL and Evil Pipe were rather popular. I preferred the Freak kit myself...
There are just too many barrels to pick just the "best" - sometimes it comes down to preference. For example, a lot of people used to swear by the J&J Ceramic, but I hated mine.
