Default Trip ideas and tips?

Okay, so the deal is, my friends and I are hoping to put together a sort of year long trip around the US just to get out and see some stuff, put in a little bit of travelling time before we go to college. We plan on beginning this at the beginning of next summer after our senior year, and we are just starting to plan it out right now. Our main idea is, of course, to work like crazy and save up as much money as possible before we go, but keep the trip cheap without taking away from the experience. We plan on buying a relatively cheap travel trailer or a small pickup truck camper, so we know we aren't going to be in for a luxurious time. Our objective (or at least mine) is to get out and see things, not sit in a trailer and play xbox on the road for a year.

So to start things off, does anyone have any tips to keeping things cheap other than the typical conserve energy, buy at grocery stores and rarely go out for food, etc etc methods? Mind you, we are going for roughly a year long trip, so we are going to try to be very frugal. I've worked out the typical ideas for money, such as individual spending money, an emergency account, etc, but if anyone has any good ideas for the trip in any financial way, I'm listening.

Plus, if your area has any interesting places that are worth the while visiting, please feel free to tell me, Im trying to get a good list of places. Try to stay away from the most popular places like niagra falls, NYC, or yellowstone nat. park, I've got most of the popular ones down.

Thanks
