Get the Springfield, Sig or the M1911.
Revolvers are also a good choice. Look into a single action as well as a double action. Single action would be safer
around kids, but double action is pretty much the standard. The .40 is a good round, but... meh, 9mm is just as good. Also keep in mind the price of ammunition when you are looking at purchasing a firearm. A gun can shoot like a dream and you buy one, only to find out that the rounds are $5/pop. Be careful, Dan.
