3 men go to a hotel and get a room. It's a cheap hotel, and they only have to pay $30.00 for the room. Each man pays $10.00. Like I said, it's a cheap hotel, and the room isn't very good.

The hotel manager looks in the records and sees that the men paid $30.00 for the room, and notices that the room they are in is only a $25.00 room (like I said, it's a CHEAP hotel!) so he gives the bellhop $5.00 to give back to the men.

On the way back to the room, the bellhop decides there is no way to divide 5.00 into three so he puts $2.00 in his pocket and gives each of the men $1.00.

So, each of the men end up paying $9.00 for the room. $9 X 3= $27. The bellhop keeps $2.00. $27.00 + 2.00 = $29.00. The original cost was $30.00. Where did the extra $1.00 go?


Apparantly, most of the time women get this answer correct. Men have trouble the first time they hear it. The person who answers this correctly will get an e-high five from me!

when the $5 got taken out, 2 guys paid $8 and one paid $9, making it $25. Then, if you take the $2 the bellhop took and put it with the $25, itll give you $27. Which leaves the $3 that the bellhop gave back. so theres no money missing.

it helps when you get paid in small bills and have plenty laying around...

Maybe the dollar is towards the energy to go up and down the halls/stairs cause the bellhop is so fat hes lazy unless you pay him. :dodgy:

Now that I took a few minutes to go in depth, DFSniper's way is very possible and I cant see any other way. It'd be $9x3=27 and give $1 to each of the guys and you'd get 30.

The men initially paid $10 each: $30.

The refund was $5.00, which was split $2 to the bellhop, $1 ea to the 3 men; $5.00.

The hotel got $25, the bellhop got $2, each of the 3 men got back $1 apiece (making the cost of the room $9.00 ea - $27.00); the original $30.00 is accounted for.

the manager gives 5 dollars back to the guys but the bellhop gives them 3 dollars. the room was 25 dollars, the men get 3 which = 28 dollars and the the bellhop has the other 2 dollars = 30 dollars

Basically what the riddle does is make it look like the bellhop got paid twice. Think about it:

Room:25 dollars
Bellhop gets paid: 2 dollars
Men get a dollar a piece :3 dollars
Total: 30 dollars

Basically, the men pay 9 dollars a piece unknowingly because they pay 25 dollars for the room and then 2 dollars to the bellhop. So since each man paid 10 dollars a piece, but got a dollar back, that equals 9 dollars. 25 dollars for the room + 2 dollars to bellhop = 27 dollars divided by 3 men = 9 dollars a piece.
