What exactly does a regulator do to make it one of the "first upgrades you should get"? And, should I pick up a longer barrel then the one that came on my TLX?

A regulator does what the title says. It regulates the air flowing into the marker. Upgrading to a regulator allows you to better control the air flowing into the marker allowing better consistency (which improves accuracy). It is highly recommended to use a regulator.

If money isn't an issue...for the aka 2-liter reg. It is the best on the market and people get +1 -1 over the chronograph; however, if you aren't real serious into paintball it just isn't worth the money. You can get a Bob Long Torpedo which are simple in design and are great for the money (around $60 new).
