Just about everyone has a computer nowdays. Just wondering how many build there own. Or did you just buy it from a store. Myself I like to build my own and only get the things on it you really want. How many computer Guru's do we have here?????

All of the systems and servers at my company were built by me. At home, we have two vwjimmy desktops and a HP laptop.....

im going to, and i research a ton before, but i dont know if i could tell you what is better. i could tell you what you'd want things for and give you instructions, but there are so many possibilities that things get a little gray rather than black and white. i built a DVR/media center or 2 with my dad but right now thats it until college when i can build my own.

bamf dell laptops... thats like where you call in what you want... thats not REALLY building it yourself. they tell you if it will work and then assemble it.

laptops are whatever when it comes to me. I use Dell because I get good pricing.

My servers however and my gaming rig are always built ground up.

I've thought about building a PC, but doubt I have the knowledge. Right now I am rockin a G4 iBook, and couldn't be happier. :D

the computer I'm using was purchased about 8 years ago. The only thing original to it is the Monitor, tower casing and the keyboard (which is the cause of many on my typos). Since I got it, it has been gutted and rebuilt twice by a "techogeek" officer at work. I got 120 gigs (80+40 slave), faster processor (but not nearly the fastest) and all new guts.

I need more HD space -.-

I build everything ground up. Homebrew systems tend to be more robost and lower cost. Plus then I get what I actually want. I have build my last 3 systems.

Laptops suck because it is way more expensive to build your own. So I have to buy those from dell or whom ever is cheapest.

I need to build a computer... this one is over 5 years old. Haha.

I put have 260gigs of hard disk space in it (60+200 slave), 512 RAM, and a new network card... but thats about it... You cant do **** with Compaq's. :(

I'm looking for a ATi graphics card for it... but its hard to find due to the type of mother board and ports I have.

I was going to build my own but realized I needed money for my truck. I was going to use AMD instead of Intel on it. I am on a Toshiba Satellite Tablet PC. Has 512 megs of ram, and I plan on putting 512 more in it. I'm in A+ at school(computer services class) and we take apart computers all the time in there.

my computer was probly built about 8 to 10 years ago by my dad. my dad taught me how to work on them several years ago, and between my dad and me upgrading the thing, now theres not a piece of my compy that's original. even the case has been changed twice.

I built mine with my dad 2 years ago. Not bad at the time, and still isn't bad as far as they go nowadays. I updated it to XP a little bit ago, and am still learning it as I was using W2k forever and learned almost everything there is to know about that system. :( Still miss it, but XP has so much that W2K didn't have.

I didn't build mine. My grandma had it custom built before she passed and left all her computer stuff to me. It had all the latest parts when she had it built. It's definitely capable of running Vista. I can't remember what it ranked on the Vista performance scale when I was running the Vista beta, but the only technology it would be behind on is that the processor isn't a dual core. I'm capable of building my own but my next computer will be a laptop, so it will be awhile before I build one of my own..

Tis amazing, the graphics are unmatched, the screen is crystal clear, the only complaint I have is 2 hours of batt life, they claim 3 off the core 2 duo processor but it only really gets about 1.45-2 and ALOT less if you are watching DVD's playing games or burning them etc.

seriously... its not like you walk around while typing on the laptop... you set it down, so who cares if its plugged in or not.

What did you expect with all the pr0n?

-_-;;

I would build my own computer, but I don't really need to, as I am not a serious gamer of any sort on the computer, or anything of the like. I just use computers for internet, homework, notes, and chatting. As well as a storage device for all my music. Things like Photoshop are on the side. And as far as garage band and final cut, I have school computers for that :D.

I'm a geek! I would have to say it's better building your computer than buying one from a store. It's cheaper to build a computer than buy one with the same performance. Also you could customize more to your liking than you would be able to just buying one.

lol i would need more than 40 gigs, but the drive i got now is serious overkill. its a 250 gigger. keeps things running smoothly, and if i ever need to store, lets just say the tax information for the population of california, i could :P

I have built a few different computers. The one I'm on now I built from spare parts in my dad's office because I was bored. Its runnin Ubuntu linux and win98. My main gaming comp is gettin kindof old, but my dad/brother built it. Waitin for dx10 cards to become more available aswell as Vista to build the next one.

I'm useing a Dell Latitude C840 right now. It was free from my dad's company when they gave him his new one. The desktop we have is an E machines, we got it in like 2001, but it becomes mine once we get a new one which should be right before/ right after Vista come out. I was looking into building one, but I just don't have the money right now. I plan on hopefully doing something with the E machine desktop though if I can. Any ideas?

WOW!! i just got the rest of my parts in yesterday... was about to post a new thread too..

Case: my case (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16811145050)
Mobo: AsRock Dual Series
CPU: AMD 3800+ (2.4Ghz)
HDD: 160GB
RAM: 1GB
GPU: ATI X1600 (256MB)
Power Supply: Demon Black Chrome 650W
# of fans (not including CPU/GPU): 3 80mm in the case, 1 80mm and 1 120mm on the power supply

Total price spent: under $300
Retail value: over $800

and in the infamous words of FPS Doug: "it OWNS!"

this is the 3rd one i built. the other two were made from leftover parts... (one was made completely of 10+ year-old parts, the other was an EMachines with a blown HDD, so i installed my 2GB and 4GB drives...)

My friend is giving me his old computer(w00t) It doesn't have a video card, and it has mix matched RAM(768mb or so.)

I just ordered this video card: http://www.pcprogress.com/product.asp?m1=pw&pid=ATIR9800SE128OEM

I know it isn't the best, but it's a step up what used to be in the computer, and he has the same one in his current computer except his is PCI E, and his is the Sapphire Pro. I'll mainly be using the comp for RYL and CS:S anyways, so I don't need anything amazing.

And as soon as I get 100 dollars extra, I'll be ordering this: http://www.clubit.com/product_detail.cfm?itemno=A4308026&cmp=OTC-pricewatch
