Is there a way to approximate your fps without a chronograph?

No no no....leave it to Bob to screw it up. :) It's approximately 100 feet away from a tree (on flat ground, of course), shoot shoulder height at a flat trajectory. When the balls are hitting the bottom of the tree consistently, then it should be slow enough to play with.

I don't trust the tree thing. AThere's no real way to judge fps, even with that method.

Just get a chronograph. You can buy them relatively cheap these days, especially the little yellow ones. I got mine brand new for 60.00, and I know you can buy them used for a lot less.

And I know you cant replace an eye for under 60 bucks... moral of the story just buy one it saves you money in the long run. ;)
