View Full Version : New Laptop.. 56k think twice

04-22-2006, 04:59 PM
Well my boss told me to find myself a new laptop, the only thing he told me was to be reasonable on the cost and it had to run on windows.

So naturally I designed the sickest laptop I possibly could keeping in mind that I wanted something smaller and lighter then my previous Thinkpad.

This is what I ended up with.

Alienware Sentia
Intel centrino 2.0 ghz 2 mb cache 533 mhz
14 widescreen 5:3 viewing ratio
Intel High Def graphics
Intel 5.1 high def audio
8 x DVD rw CD rw combo drive
2 gig DDR ram
80 gig hard drive 7200RPM

Overall I am very happy with this laptop and need to get Halo for it so I have something to do at work

going enough ram in there man? holy crum!

04-22-2006, 05:08 PM
heh, I think I should be ok. :p
EDIT: yeah that is my cell phone underneath it, kind of there to hold it up so you can see it, also there for a thickness comparison.

nice. i would like to try an alienware computer they seem really nice.

you are rich, I thought I'd let you know that.

04-22-2006, 05:15 PM
Did not pay for it ;) my boss did. Although my expense account is pretty much gone for awhile.

04-22-2006, 05:16 PM
Convince your boss you need an extra one and send it to me...:D

Did not pay for it ;) my boss did. Although my expense account is pretty much gone for awhile.
that doesn't change the fact that you are rich. \

04-22-2006, 05:40 PM
Damn, how thin is that?

04-22-2006, 06:01 PM
Sick.. lol. You are rich :p

04-22-2006, 06:21 PM
imagining that it's as thick as my cellphone .. i'd probably say it had to be about an inch .. or a little more that 3 usb ports stacked .. relating to the picture .. :p .. How much did you get that laptop for ?? .. it's like .. top knotch

04-22-2006, 06:23 PM
lol i bet you're loving the 3 hour battery life too ;)

It's a sick laptop... I'm all for function over form though, when it comes to computers... I have a SMALL Sony Vaio and this massive Dell Inspiron 9300 with 19" widescreen... And I'd take this Dell any day, even if I had to tote it around. There's a larger battery, larger screen, more functional keyboard, faster processor(generally), INTERNAL optical drive(external ones are a PITA), REAL video card, darn-near silent, larger hard-drive, etc... You might not think that the big screen is worth the extra size, but I've got 1920x1200 to work with... Much more productive... Lol but yeah... The Alienware laptop is MAD nice... Battery life just sucks... That's pretty much the only thing I noticed with my friend's...

TRB, I don't know how well you'll be doing with Halo on the integrated graphics though :(

Radeon X300 in mine :) All I play is CS, and I get 80+fps at 1920x1200... lol I love it :)

04-22-2006, 06:26 PM
That's sweet, I'm jealous.

04-22-2006, 06:32 PM
Dude you got a Dell :)

Since Dell now owns Alienware. Nice Laptop buddy enjoy it!

04-22-2006, 06:35 PM
Since Dell now owns Alienware.
Tragic, isn't it... Alienware's CS was top notch... Dell is alright but not great in terms of customer service...

...I was mad when I heard...

For whoever asked about the thickness, .75 inches according to their site, I have yet to measure it.

as for the graphics not being capable of halo, im pretty sure it can handle it, last I knew the graphics card that this comes with is second to the nvidia (sp). I may be wrong though so far the graphics seem supurb.

with the 9 cell batt that I added I can get close to the 3 hours they claim. :smirk:

04-22-2006, 06:47 PM
on the size i was close enough ;) .... bleh with added graphics ... like playing halo .. your battery life will go down ... but i'd imagine your pc being plugged in anyways ....

I believe your laptop could handle it ... even if it couldn't you could always switch the rendering options to a bit lower ...

04-22-2006, 06:52 PM
Oh I know the bat life will go down it always does. Im not too worried as the only time i am running battery is when i am home and at meetings at work.

04-22-2006, 06:58 PM
then you should be fine :) ... how much did that thing run you ?? ... or does you boss only know ?? :p

04-22-2006, 07:01 PM
it cost more then I would have paid, and I dont think my boss knows how much that is yet. I just sit and wait until he gets my account statement.

04-22-2006, 07:16 PM
if you dont mind me asking what do you do, like your job? lol. i just got my moms G4 powerbook, its nice but the screens starting to go i think.

04-23-2006, 08:49 PM
I. Hate. You. :cloud:

I know a bit about working on computers but nothing much about the actual hardware. I'm guessing though just because Matt owns it, it has to be good. Even if it wasn't good and Matt owned it we would have to say it was awesome. Looks pretty cool and it is really thin. Just about as thin as the Vaio that my mom got a couple weeks ago.

04-24-2006, 11:19 AM
actually, alienwares arent a whole lot more expensive than other laptops. you can get a sweet one for under 1500.

and yes, dell does own alienware, but they are still operating independently.

dell does own alienware

So Matt should have told us this earlier so we could have said,

"Dude, you're getting a Dell"
