Reffing rec/woods is a bit different than reffing an airball game. Even inside paintball is different. Best thing to do is play it by ear, use what you know best, don't freak out about it and be a koo ref so you don't get shot so much lol -

yeah defintely use a shield or something... Ensure you are watching the newbs cause they tend to need a little babysitting, but help them don't get frustrated...

1) Be fair.
2) Be consistant.
3) Be firm.

dont be a wuss when checking someone, get in there and check dont stand across the feild and guess... that really pisses people off, err learn to yell extremely loud because when people pull there masks they are normally deaf morons who need a good screamin at to put it back on "lol, sad but true", always be aware of your surrondings for those without a barrel sock "or plug" on there gun, mask pullers etc... if anyone ever loses there mask in the middle of a intense fire fight run as fast a possible and if needed take a hoppers worth a paint to insure there safety :p. thats pretty much it, everyone else covered the rest lol.

be loud, be fair and be CONSISTANT. Have a couple old towels on hand (for wiping) and when you see someone being unsafe, collect their barrel until you put them back in or eject them from the field. Make safety your #1 priority because after all, it's just a game (sport/arguement...LOL)

be sure to listen and pay attention, i can not count the number of times i yell paint check, and the ref just sits there and stares at me like im a retard.
So yea, that is all i see that is wrong with the refs at my feild.

DO NOT USE A SHIELD! a shield is the worse thing to use, it gets in the way of everything and diverts your concentration. if you are that afraid of getting hit, dont ref, period.
if you are on a field with newbs, a towel can be useful to escort them off the field if they are afraid, if its experienced players, dont bother, it just gets in the way.
stay low, avoid running across lanes, even if you think they arent being used. run along the tape if you need to get a paint check, then come in from the tape side or the back.
i reffed indoor, but im assuming outdoor would be a little harder due to more distractions and more ambient noise. just make sure you stay focused.
also, make sure you cooperate with the other refs. dont be running all over the field, just concentrate on your section, and if someone yells for a paintcheck on the oposite team, let let your other refs know, because they probably didnt hear the player's yell.
reffing really isnt as fun as you think, especially with experienced players. you can really get alot of people mad at you if you make the wrong call, so make sure you are paying attention.
