Let me tell you, I have a newfound respect for blade makers and machinists.

I started this Day Wear Scottish Dirk project some time ago but I didn't like the "end result" so I decided to "make it right"......

I started out with a 2" x 24" hunk of 1/4" bar stock and shaped it down but didn't like the point. I even handled it with wood but again...I don't like the handle.

So I decided to change it. I put a longer edge on the blade [old edge was too "short"], made a "false edge" that didn't previously exist but could still use some work and now have a large enough piece of antler for the handle.

...and by the way, all this was done with a common FILE  .....

1/4" thickness, false edge at the furthest end from you:

Full edge. It looks dark, almost like a "false edge' but trust me...she's sharp:

Rest:

The antler I got for the handle:

Can I tell you how stiff and sore my right arm is??? However, I'm much happier with how this is turning out than what it looked like before.

That was done with a file?!?!?!? What is wrong with you? haha, It looks rough but effective enough. You going to do serrations on the other side?

Yep...a freaking file -.-

This is going to be a Day wear Scottish Dirk. There are no 'serrations' as is commonly known.

If you are thinking of "Jimping" then no. That's the design you see on the spine of a Sgian Dubh [black knife] in the sock.

This blade is 13" long from tip to hilt....and heavy. MORE than able to take on........uh.........."utilitarian" needs.......... :D

Dude, a belt sander would be so much better & easier. I know this after forging a knife out of a railroad spike.

Ninja edit: Oh ya, it looks good & cant wait to see a finished picture.

Thanks. Now...tell me how to "home temper" it..or at least...the edge of it.

From what I remember, heat it up & drop it off in oil or water.

Thanks TDS. My shoulder is finally loosening up...lol.

Did. And in looking around, this appears [by what I've read] that this to be "Case hardened" steel.

Here's one of the handle that I hate. It's coming off, in favor of the antler handle:

Noob, your dirk is upset that your pictures don't do it justice, so it scars you so you will never forget.

PS. I thought you got a new camera a while back?

That's OK, I got the OK to buy a coolpix L110. Now...to go work an overtime or 2 :D
