View Full Version : Discovered an AWESOME file sync/share/backup application...

OK as many of you know I am in the IT field. I use data transfer and portable drives all the time to sync files from my work PC to my personal PC. Well today I found my new favorite tool. Dropbox. Some of you are already using it, but today I got the iPhone app and now I love it.

Here is what it does:

1st its free (at least for the 2gig account, you can pay to get more space)
2nd you create your account and install the app on the PC's you want to get in sync
3rd you save files to the Dropbox folder on your pc. The app then syncs it to the website and to the other pc's you have linked to the account.

If you want to share a file you can right click it and it will create a unique link to the file that you can share. I am using that to let family download full size pics of the family from their house. No need to email smaller pics.

If you have an iPhone you can use the free app and upload your phone pics to backup and share.

The other thing that made me love the app is the restore to a previous version option. They save up to 30 days worth of changes so if you realize you should not have modified a document you can get an old copy restored. If you want forever restores there is a pay option for that too.

All of the data is encrypted to the same level as required by the military.

Nope just an iPhone app for now. But the desktop clients are still needed and work great.

There is a portable version and it allows the same type of instant sync as with the desktop version.

Man I love this thing!

Upping this thread. Dropbox now has an Android version and a BB version is coming soon. If you don't' have Dropbox go get it now!

*downloads for Android* although ill probably never need it.

i love using this to transfer files from my laptop to a school computer to print out. saves the trouble of having to find a usb stick to transfer between computers (school computers are notoriously slow)

Sounds like a snazzy deal. Wish I had a phone I could do that with. Make a great truck & parts file storage for when hunting.

Sorry, but that's just dumb. There are thousands of people who rely on the cloud daily to store important files. In fact, many people trust the cloud more than they do their own local storage. You're just arguing for the sake of...arguing. :rolleyes:

And really, for those of you that are concerned about security, you can get a free app called TrueCrypt (http://www.truecrypt.org/)and encrypt your data. Then it will be secure.

Either way DB is the bomb.

NP buddy. Like I said I love it. I use it everyday. It is how I take notes for things too. I keep a word doc that I update from what ever PC I am on and the changes sync to all my pcs. Also helps that it keeps a revision history so you can go back a version or 30 if you mess something up.

I transfer my lesson plans from my laptop at home to my school computer. Much better than email, and quicker! Coolio!

can you have multiple accounts? Im thinking it would be nice to have one here at home to help my bro/ sis/ parents able to share but would also like one between friends of mine off at school or something.

You can share different folders with different people. I'm sure you could have different accounts, but I'd imagine it would make syncing a pain.

You can create one account and share folders individually with prople. I have a share with my wife and a separate one with my sister. It works great to share stuff and files.
