Who's got it? Haven't even learned Vista completely yet and boom, they throw a new version into the ring. Been hearing good and bad about it but very little bad so far, especially compared to Vista which I don't like either. lol, response was so intense to get the download before 2.5M that they crashed MS's servers WOW!

Good news, Windows 7 fanatics -- Microsoft has decided to nix that 2.5 million download limit in order to a) calm everyone down and b) enable its servers to relax just a wee bit. After the Windows 7 Beta download was launched, it took just hours to bring the servers to a screeching halt as consumers 'round the globe attempted to get in before the 2.5 million mark was hit. Now, however, the team has removed that barrier for the next fortnight (through January 24th, being that it was decided on Saturday) in effort to make the download experience more ideal. Crisis averted.

Been using it for some time now. Vista is the ME of the new OS's and Seven is XP Pro.

Much better but still has its quirks.

I'll translate for you, Drago: Seven is simply awesome and you should ditch that crap that is called Vista for it in a heartbeat. :)

Thing about that is if I ditched Vista I'd have to download all the other software I have all over again. That was quite a chore when I got this new computer -

Actually, it blows vista out of the water. It's able to run amazing on only a gig of ram. I have it on my other partition so I use it more often than XP atm except for gaming. BTW, the beta keys can only be used on up to 3 different computers. Good thing my friend got me my own set for both 32 bit and 64! lol.

I agree 100%. I've had it for some time now also. Windows 7 is a great version of Vista. Once it's fully released it will be the OS I will migrate to.

Question... How do i set up a dual boot so that i can run vista and 7, because all of my stuff is on vista, and its nice to still have vista being that windows 7 is still only a beta, so if something goes wrong and its the only OS, your hooped.

partition your hard drive.

bigred76
01-12-2009, 09:44 PM
Use GParted Live CD to repartition it if you have Vista. Nothing else can move the blocks that Vista puts smack dab in the middle of it's partition. Back it up first, too.

I'm running Vista Ultimate 64-bit at home right now. I've got Windows 7 at work to try out, but I just freshly installed Windows Server 2008 Standard as my desktop OS at work so I don't plan to format that. I'll probably just use a second hard drive to give 7 a try. I'll probably switch to it at home if it's as awesome as they're saying it is, but in all honesty I have no problem with 64-bit Vista.

Vista has a built in partition tool. For XP, i used partition manager. Free for home edition.

bigred76
01-12-2009, 11:23 PM
Vista's built-in partitioner sucks. GParted is the only way to truly repartition a Vista partition.

So, if I were to go with this, I'd have to wipe everything off my hard drive, right?

Is it worth going to from XP, or would you just leave XP alone since it's good already and get Windows 7 on the next computer?

I mean, the only thing I've heard about Windows 7 is that it boots up faster...that doesn't bother me since I never shut my computers off in the first place.

downloading Win7 right now. now the real trick, getting my pc to run gparted. my old components didnt like it, but i hope the new ones will.

nvm, that sounds like a typical tech geek!

DF: If you need help with GParted and getting it to run, let me know. There are different boot options you can use (such as force VESA) to get it to run better.

yeah, the problem i had was that it would lock up when selecting graphics drivers. i'll probably try it later tonight and see if it works.

Definitely sounds like you need to force the VESA graphics driver.

No you wouldn't have to wipe everything off your hard drive. You would need to create a partition on it to install it on that partition.

Hmmmm, I might have to look into that. Once, I tried loading XP on my daughter's computer that has ME on it. It failed, but it always gave me an option when we booted up to either choose XP or ME (looked like an old DOS screen - is that the way it is when you partition?) I ended up having to reinstall ME on her computer...

Now, do you guys think it's worth it, or should I just wait until it comes out on it's own with a different computer? If it's worth it, I'd totally go buy an external hard drive (been looking for an excuse to do this anyways) and save all my important stuff there. But I don't want to screw anything up with what I have as XP works pretty great for me as it is...

DFSniper
01-13-2009, 10:40 AM
yep, thats how you partition. as far as completely switching to it, i wouldnt do that until its released, then see if you can find the reason for a new pc, depending how out of date yours is.

Hey does anyone have any idea when the full version will come out? This is the first time I've heard of this and I am dying to get off of Vista. Vista is having a lot of driver problems with my computer and it's driving me nuts with these unexpected shutdowns. By the looks of the OS at ms's page it looks like alot of this vista crap has been fixed.

If you dont feel like using a partitioning tool to resize your disk, you can run Windows Seven in a VM.

You can get VMWare Server for free. All you need to do is register and they will send you an e-mail with instructions to get the key.

Once you have it installed you can create a W7 image and play all you like with it.

and for the lazy people:

Enjoy!

I'd say '10 or '11. Right now they're out with the Pre-Beta, which I'm loving (and using as I type this). There's some issues with a couple of my daily programs I usually use causing the OS to lock up, but as this isn't a full release, I'm surprised that that's it. Everything else works completely fine with a fresh install 'cept my touchpad's scroll bars (downloaded the driver from my laptop's manufacture and it works fine now).

The Pre-Beta testing will run until September, if I remember right, then they're either going to release a Beta or a Release Client for more testing.

If you end up needing a computer, don't hold off just for the sake of Windows7, Vista/XP Pro will run fine until the production version of W7 starts turning out of the factory.

im loving 7 right now. since i dont have internet at home yet (7 doesnt like unsigned drivers, which my wireless adapter happens to have, so i didnt have internet on it to begin with, which meant i didnt use it much before) and i must say, its very easy on the eyes. and i'm LOVING the 10 second wallpaper slideshow! now i dont have to change my wallpaper every few days!

With anything you can install (.exe's, basically), you can right click, and troubleshoot compatibility. Tell it that it worked properly on an older version, and select which. ;)

I heard its going straight to RC1, and then to launch, skipping RC2 and everything else in between.

I actually though they were already at RC1, and I heard it was gonna be launched late this year?

well i didn't see anybody start any new threads lately regarding this topic. But Windows 7 is for sale as of... 2 days ago now?

well how are things for those that have been using it since the beta.

How many of you took advantage of the school discount of 29.99 for the legal version. I'm downloading it right now and thought there would be more talk about this again.

I'm not too computer savvy, so I want to ask a few questions before I get my copy installed.

When upgrading from Vista, will it erase all of my programs?
Is it difficult to install?

Hob Hayward
10-28-2009, 11:37 AM
It won't delete your programs, but it's much better to back all of your stuff up and do a clean install, it'll be faster, and all your lurking spywares and such will be gone for good...

I've been running RC1 on my desktop for a few months now, I like it alot. Dual booted with linux and leopard too, lol. (core i7, hack prooooooo)

Edit: sorry thats TRI booted.
