Before I get started, I know how one traditionally views hidden files and folders, since I've done it millions of times before I installed iTunes, and I've verified the technique in other computers, Microsoft Help and Microsoft Help online.

The problem is, I can't get to my hidden ipod files outside of iTunes, and I think iTunes is to blame.

I'm using windows XP, despite my high contrast 95 style desktop (it helps video performance). Here's what I normally do:

Click "Tools" > "Folder options" > "View" Tab> then select the "show hidden files and folders" check box... but it's not there now.

I feel like I'm taking crazy pills. all i want is to see the inbisible forders!

I run iTunes and I still have that option.

Are you running SP3? I'm assuming you have administrative privileges?

yes and yes. I found 2/3 of my music using cmd hackery and some basic knowledge of the ipod file names.

I've had the option for as long as I can remember, now I don't.

edit: got all songs visible with attrib comand in cmd, but I still don't have that option which bothers me

i did a search it's a registry problem, I went to fix the reg with regedit and it was gone. I'm redownloading sp3 since windows support recomended that as a registry fixing tool.

sp3 was released then pulled as a critical update. There are know bugs. If you want a reg file to put it back let me know and I will write one for you.

Ok, I checked system and I don't have sp3 despite the fact that I'm 90% sure I accepted it in the autoupdater. I ran the sp3 installer and got an "access denied" error. Bamf, I apparently need this registry entry:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\Advanced

or

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Explorer\Advanced\Folder\Hidden\SHOWALL

I need the value "hidden" or "checkedvalue" to equal 1. I'm trying to use regedit, but it's a bit new to me.

Ok after some short tinkering I figured some stuff out. I'm stuck here though. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v288/claustrophobia9/Untitled-5copy.jpg

I think I edit the far value..... but how? I'm told it should be as a dword (hex) and I think it is, but I can't tell.

"Type"="radio"
"CheckedValue"=dword:00000001
"ValueName"="Hidden"
"DefaultValue"=dword:00000002
"HKeyRoot"=dword:80000001

this is the one i was talking about:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Explorer\Advanced

create a DWORD value called ShowSuperHidden and change the value to 1.

reboot.

the key I gave him should show hidden files. He has a slew of other issues now.

ok. that worked, but i still don't see the option for me to show or hide it. I can see hidden files, i'd just rather have the option for later.

something is messed up with the shell. You could keep using the reg file and swap the values if you want to hide files again.

I really don't understand your SP3 issues. I have installed it on several computers now without issue. :confused:
