View Full Version : Irish's Mortar/Handheld Bazooka Project

Mods, if this isn't the right place go ahead and move it and it's cool if you decide to close the non-project mortar thread I made.

So I decided to try and make a dual-purpose Mortar/Handheld Bazooka (thanks for the idea Shady:D ).

All I really need to know is how to make it so it holds pressure. I searched around and couldn't find anything that really helped. I know that it needs a pressure chamber and a valve system, but what materials should I use? How should I use them?

Thanks in advance :D!!

First place I would look at is the paintball cockbock that Zee (I think it was him) was sending people through the homade paintball equipt thread. You will need a expansion chamber and valve set up. look around on the net and on youtube im sure you will fined everything you need to get started.

Okay, thanks man.

otherwise you could use an explosive, i use hairspray in my potato gun, but it takes a while to reload, to spray in the the hairspray and such.

I personaly say to use air and regulate it then you can controle the volocity better the range and consistancy. Personaly i dont belive "explosive" anything is good on a paintball feild.

Okay, I kinda want this to be field-legal. If I were allowed to use combustion, I would just use the mortar I built back in 6th grade with pringles cans.

It was me, Offer still stands. :D

What exactly did you make? What does it do?

Zee
05-19-2008, 03:11 PM
I didnt make anything, theres a paintball mortar/cannon/grenade launcher in the paintball cookbook.

irishwarrior
05-19-2008, 03:15 PM
Ah, I saw it but, I don't want combustion it's too dangerous. Thanks for sending me that cookbook by the way. I will probably be using the majority of the mods in that document.

Here are my basic plans (sorry for my mad drawing skills :dodgy::

I just need to figure out how to fire it, lol and what materials to use.

yeah I beleive some of the launchers have co2 conversions to them to Irish, bein a long time since I looked at it though.

Another plac you could check is the empire since I seen you joined there and are ignoring me (Stooge thing to do ;) ) go to the alternative weapons section and look through that section there is alot of different Ideas there and im sure if you made a thread asking for help lots of people would ask you. I beleive someone just asked for plans and someone threw up helpfull links to him. Check it out its deffinatly worth a look.

I'm thinking try and make it single tube, LAW-style, HPA w/remote, reg, try for a pneumatic trigger (it may be more than my limited skills can muster, but if I can look at one up close to see how it works, I might be able to), 18-25" give or take 5", 2-4" diameter, and make sure to have redundant safety features (don't want to end up like the guy on "If you build it EMTs will come thread").

Gonna need an email addy brother.

I'm also gonna try and build a cannon, most likely wadding and paintballs, but I'm gonna do it from scratch (my own ideas) and go from there. I'm sure I'll need help along the way but thats what all of you are for :D

pringles cans irish? thats epic! I'm excited to see if this turns out, then i'd have to make myself one :D

Here's a similar plan for anyone interested:http://blog.makezine.com/archive/2007/11/tshirt_canon_weekend_proj.html I may try to modify for my purposes. Does anyone know the purpose for the U shaped pvc?

irishwarrior

I have made the basic plan: Self Contained CO2, reg, pressure chamber (haven't decided of I should make it narrow and long or wide and short), gauge (on pressure chamber), sprinkler valve, 9v battery powered trigger system (see the pdf link on the page I linked in my previous post), muzzle. I'm going to try and use ABS instead of PVC because it is made for compressed air systems (it splits instead of shatters). The first order of business will be to construct the sprinkler valve.

DFSniper
05-20-2008, 06:37 PM
i would make it wide for co2 so it has a chance to expand.

How is the sprinkler valve setup going? are you going to take pics and whatnot as you go along for a "Irish's how too..." thread?

irishwarrior
05-23-2008, 09:18 AM
Actually, I may not use it. I got sent some plans from a guy on the empire. I will definitely take pictures once I get the parts and start putting it together, this weekend hopefully.

That is a great page for anything Mil-sim, there are alot of very knowledgable people on there. be sure to check it often im tryin to buy some more stuff through the BST's there now.

Let us know if there are any changes.

Do you have a cost analisys done?
When do you hope to have it done buy?

irishwarrior
05-23-2008, 09:49 AM
I have no idea on cost, if it's more than I can handle right now, than I'll buy the pieces for the pressure chamber to valve assembly and get the rest later. Hopefully, I will have this done in 2-3 months. Depends on how long it takes to make everything air-tight and functional. Also, if it takes awhile once school let's out June 14th or so I'll have all the time in the world, at least until football conditioning,:D.

Here in the states we have something called "Child Labor Laws". I don't know about you Canucks (i can say it, i'm part canadian), but I can't get a job until I'm 15. If it were up to me I would already have a job.

slim and shady
05-23-2008, 03:14 PM
You cant work till your 15? how does your economy servive? child labor is what keeps Canada going strong, thats why we can afford to give you our raw materials then buy them back at like 4 times the cost LOL!

So for your project what are you planing to use for sights bi-pod ect. Give me some insight.

irishwarrior
05-23-2008, 05:38 PM
Our economy isn't surviving. Your dollars are worth more than our dollars, I think. I think that I will make a shroud out of PVC and attach a weaver rail to the underside. Attached to the weaver would be a front-grip or quick disconnect bi-pod. For sights, I don't even know how the flip-up sights work for determining range. Could you give me a little insight on it?

slim and shady
05-24-2008, 08:57 AM
To be honest Irish I have never seen anyone actually use sights on a morter maby on a shoulder launched with a sliding rear sight that you move up and down after you aproxamate how far away your target is. Usually people just shoot them a few times and you will get the hang of how to shoot it right away. Hope this helps a little let me know how the project is going.

irishwarrior
05-24-2008, 03:19 PM
Thanks Shady. I got all the parts today except for the regulator, about $40, so not to bad. I'll have pics up tomorrow after the guts are done.

I hope that you get a chance to make a vid, then of corse you have to throw up a detailed how to in the "How to" thread I made.

irishwarrior
05-30-2008, 07:27 PM
Yeah, of course the trick is building it. My dad's been gone for the past week (business trip to Tokyo) and my mom hasn't been able to take me to pevs for that reg. I need my dad for his experience in PVC and related materials (still need to get to the hardware store and get some parts). Once I get everything finished and such (may take a while, depends on how long it takes me to get an airtight fitting with the piping) I'll make a vid and if the guy who gave me the plans gives me permission, I will post up on the how to thread.

slim and shady
05-30-2008, 07:36 PM
the guy off of the Empire? Hope everything goes ok getting what you need its a drag when your project stalls due to lack of parts, or waiting on shipping! Let me know how it turns out.

05-31-2008, 04:41 PM
Man... interesting project but I think it may be a pain to get it under 300 fps.... a pain for the chrono that is... I hope you have backups.. ;)

irishwarrior
05-31-2008, 04:47 PM
Well the plans say that it will shoot a nerf rocket at 240fps and with the reg I can control the CO2 flow. But I have been thinking how I was gonna chrono this beast, still don't know if I even can.

slim and shady
05-31-2008, 07:04 PM
What would be hard about chronoing it? hold it over the chrono, or use a handheld the refs pack around for on feild testing.

irishwarrior
05-31-2008, 07:11 PM
Well for starters you're supposed to fire slowly 3 shots over the chrono, and with the bazooka not sure I could limit the balls to just 3.

slim and shady
05-31-2008, 09:46 PM
it wont register every ball coming out it would register it as one shoot moving however many feet per second. It is the only way that I have seen it done and I would use a nerf round for chronoing anyway so you dont use up all your ammo.

irishwarrior
06-01-2008, 05:09 AM
If I can fit a nerf round in there, that's what i'll do.

slim and shady
06-01-2008, 10:44 AM
you should be able to find them they come in a multitude of sizes.

HelpDeskHustler
06-01-2008, 01:54 PM
Sorry I'm a little late but they actually sell electronic sprinkler "dump-valves" that are a bit faster than the handles. Most handle up to 150psi with no problems.

slim and shady
06-01-2008, 03:48 PM
How much do you sell them for?

Lonus
06-04-2008, 04:34 AM
Menards sells then for around $20. The brand is rainbird.

HelpDeskHustler
06-04-2008, 05:36 AM
Make sure you get one with enough pressure though. My friends paid about 50 for one that withstands 200 but recommends 150psi

Lonus
06-04-2008, 08:31 AM
Yeah 150 psi is about it. To use a sprinkler valve you will need to increase the size of your pressure tank, so you can lower your operating pressure.

irishwarrior
06-05-2008, 03:31 AM
I'll keep that in mind, thanks for the suggestions.

Hob Hayward
06-10-2008, 09:17 PM
With a decent sized pressure chamber you should have no issues at 100psi even. I could launch a potato 400 feet or so with a basic 1" sprinkler valve and a 2.5'x3" PVC dump at 100psi.

I'm too lazy to read all of this thread to find out what you want to shoot or how far, but I would bet you could get away with lower pressures than you think.

Google pneumatic potato guns, as what you're building will end up being pretty close in design I expect.

How is the project comming along Irish no updates?

irishwarrior
06-12-2008, 09:35 AM
Haven't done anything since the last update. I've had a couple massive projects to do, my dad's been out of town (need his help on this one), just had finals, and I need to come up with some cash for a decent reg.

interceptorMR2
06-13-2008, 07:08 PM
oh you just had finals too? finals suck, just finished mine today. Can't wait to see a vid of this eventually man. If/when you do make a video, you should go more in detail like try to show the round you fire all the way through the air as you fire it, then show where it hits, then later go and show the aftermath of your destruction :D I hate how every paintball mortar video ive seen doesnt hardly show what happens except for firing.

I was planning on doing just that.

irishwarrior

Sorry Slim, if I had my way I'd already be done. I'm still getting the cash together and I'm not even sure my local store has a reg. Arrrgggghhhh, it's frustrating for me too, I really want to shoot it in my back yard,:D.
