Ok SOC, I'm sick of browsing the "what are you listening to" thread to get a feel for what you guys listen to. I know this type of thread has been done before, but I find this stuff interesting since music is a huge part of my life. So, getting to the point, its too hard to ask someone their favorite band (i at least have a difficult time picking just one) so list your top 5 favorite bands here!
As for me, my day to day, week to week listening habits change frequently, but here are my top 5 bands (in no particular order):
Mark Knopfler / Dire Straits (Classic Rock)
Dream Theater / Liquid Tension Experiment / John Petrucci (Progressive Metal)
Rx Bandits (Rock/Progressive)
Muse (Alternative/weird genre of their own)
The Devil Makes Three (Folk/rock... somewhat local band from Cali)
Yeah, I kinda cheated at my own rule by listing more than one band in two spots, but they are closely related. Mark Knopfler formed a solo career after the Dire Straits broke up, and Liquid Tension Experiment and John Petrucci's solo career are spin offs of Dream Theater.
My tastes vary quite a bit, and I will listen to pretty much everything except almost all rap, and most country.
EDIT: By the way, if anyone uses Last.fm, add me! ArmyOfOrr42

Some of my top 5 are -
ACDC (Rock)
Eazy E / NWA (Rap/hip hop)
Modest Mouse (Alternative Pop/Rock)
CCR (CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL) (Rock)
Black Sabbath / Ozzy Osbourne (Rock/Heavy Metal)
There are a lot more artists I listen to but those are just some off the top of my head. My top 5 changes often tho.

Wow. Narrowing it down to 5 is REALLY hard for me. But I'll try.
Jack Johnson (Acoustic)
My Morning Jacket (Rock/Alternative/Sound of their own)
Coldplay (Alternative/Rock)
John Mark McMillan / Jonathan David Helser (Christian/Folk) - I cheated like Moo :p
Misty Edwards (Rock/Piano/Christian)
I bounce around different artists a lot, but those are 5 that I listen to very frequently. My last.fm tells a different story, but if it showed artists most listened to for the last few months..it would line up with those 6 artists listed, haha.
By the way moo, I added you.

Lucky! I really need to get some more of his stuff. All I have is the Brushfire Fairytales album (which is excellent).
I am going to see Dream Theater on the 20th though... I'm pretty pumped about that!

Disturbed
Avenged sevenfold
The Offspring
Bush
Rev Theory
Aww. No instrumental music love so far!
Explosions in the Sky (post-rock instrumental)
A.R.E. Weapons (dirty hardcore rock)
The Doors (awesome)
El Ten Eleven (post rock instrumental)
Mogwai (post-rock instrumental)
I think more people would be into instrumental music if they gave it a try...The musicians are absolutely amazing, and you don't have someones annoying voice covering up the awesome that is being played. Stop finding comfort in lyrics, listen to real music!:p

Moe: I love instrumental stuff... Liquid Tension Experiment is all instrumental, and i like Dream Theater's instrumental stuff the best, I'm not really a fan of James Lebrie's voice. I also listen to some jazz/fusion (Weather Report).
