Because that's not how it happened in the short story. It's not an epic, it's a tragedy of a person who lost hope.

kid did a presentation on the collection in my English class, Contemporary Short Stories, the insight really made the movie better even though he basically ruined it for me. I Am Legend may not have been a good movie in the blockbuster sense where everyone fiddles around with explosions and an inch deep plot like Transformers, but it was good because it actually held some of the value that the original story had.

Explain to me the value of transformers. What realizations do you gain from it? Or is it just media consumption? Pure sensationalistic trash. Sitting in a chair with your mouth agape while you're emotionally stimulated for your own pleasure. At least "I Am Legend" had some depth, and some thought to it, whether or not it was less than some of the better movies.

XSiv Force
01-18-2008, 06:28 PM
it was just pure entertainment, not media consumption because it did not get as much hype as I AM Legend

XSiv Force
01-18-2008, 07:05 PM
i do see your logic, second the only hype it has if you call it hype is over 20 years of TOYS!!!!! Which is not hype if you want to see hype look at Halo 3. I am legend did recieve more pre-release and equal post-release than Transformers did

HelpDeskHustler
01-18-2008, 07:20 PM
I'm completely not buying that. You don't receive hype just from advertisements and media coverage, but also from the consumer reaction before the movie is released. Halo wasn't just hyped because Microsoft paid for Bungie's ad's, but also because people were so up in arms about getting it. I can personally tell you I heard FAR more people talking about Transformers before it was released than I did about I Am Legend, and I think first day box office sales will reflect that observation.

sorry, i just had to jump into the transformers vs. i am legend argument, claus. when i go to the movies, i expect entertainment, thats what i'm paying for. if i wanted insight and/or education, i'd read a work of "accepted literature" (as opposed to the "smut" novels, as my english teachers call them).

I completely understand why people go to the movies. All I'm commenting on is the mentally destitute state that our society is in. Do we do anything worth our time, or are we just circulating a system that lets us die bereft of noteworthy accomplishment?

DFSniper
01-22-2008, 06:24 PM
i agree with you on that. i think people are becoming lazy and self-centered, but thats a given... look at everything thats been done in the past 20 years: a good majority of it was for personal satisfaction and/or gain. ipods: carry all your music with you, and apple makes A LOT of money. HDTV: makes it seem like you MUST HAVE better picture quality. and the list goes on...

and the few people who are doing things to impact society (politicians and FEMA aside) are usually the humanitarians who get paid very little to do what they do. the old adage "money makes the world go 'round" is becoming truer and truer every day. i'm no exception. the only reason i'm going into mechanical engineering is because it pays TWICE as much as CAD. i could probably care less as to what i do in that job/career field.

look at video games--i think im going to stop there, the whole video games debate goes beyond spoken/written word--but basically technology has begun to corrupt our society in multiple degrees...

I think that the corruption has already been there, its just that when people start to blame things on video games, and other media, when in fact its the people that do such stupid acts, i.e. kill random people, is in fact a problem that that person has, im not condoning games where you randomly kill people, but it is up to the parents to decide whether or not they give their child that game that is rated M or AO.

I don't know. I think there are more people out there that try to improve the world than the younger generation (18-25, some as old as 30) really think there are. Thing is, that generation is sort of in their "jaded" period where everything looks bleak and dismal (I know, we all go/went through it sooner or later.) Later on, when you're more immersed in the working force trying to make ends meet and raising a family, things look A LOT different and you see there really are people who try to make a difference, just not in the giant leaps and bounds that you're expecting to see. You'd be surprised - your next door neighbors who are in the same boat as you, your old teachers, your ministers, the older couple down the street - shoot, even the grocery bagger at your local Food Mart may even be making a difference, they are out there, it's just they don't advertise their intentions. Change comes in small steps, not large bounds.

Video games? Psssh - this is where younger people come in. I can't name 10 people I personally know and associate with daily over the age of 25 that even think about them out loud. And the ones that do are the ones with kids. Movies? Everyone I know goes purely for entertainment - not to gain some insight (I totally agree with DFSniper on this one!)

Money IS what makes the world go around - try paying more than a thousand dollars of debt each month without money, and you'll see that in a hurry! But, griping about it isn't going to fix it. We owe debts, we pay debts. Businesses provide service, they expect gain for it.

I have more things I miss than don't miss....like worrying about video games ruining the youth of America, debating the moral and personal implications of the "hidden" meanings of movies, worrying about World War III and depression....I would LIKE to miss bills, getting my kids to school and church, constantly being a role model to the youth of America (and my children) and anonymity...

Edit: I don't miss everyone expecting me to have proper grammar and writing skills just because I'm a teacher! (And criticize me with improper grammar!) :D

I completely agree with all that... and would really like to be able to stop worrying about the looming recession that is eventually going to spill over the Canada/U.S. border soon. Especially since I find myself working in a dispensable trade, as people stop buying cars when they don't have any money..

What I don't miss? The drama between friends back home. Now I can talk to people, and listen to them gripe about each other, but I don't have to deal with it first-hand! :D

i dont miss having NO money. but my first paycheck is all going toward repairs on my car. but then again, i dont miss NOT having a car! and i dont miss classes that are a waste of time. in high school, you spend 7 hours in 4 classes a day (usually, some school systems are different). in college, i spend 3-4 hours in 3 classes a day, and i get the same, if not more, education than i did in high school. plus i have most of my friday off (not counting the 8 hrs of work that day )

I'm sorry, I've got to bring it back up: while I Am Legend was an overall entertaining movie and offered a good amount of suspense, it was horrible when talking about the plot and continuity. The only good thing I see when analyzing it was the fact that Will Smith did a beautiful 2 hour monologue, and his performance is one for the books. Otherwise, the movie hurt me. I can imbellish if anyone cares.
