does it matter whether you get a normal rechargeable battery or does it have to be the special spyder type?

You can use a standard 9v duracell, energizer, etc. Try that to eliminate the battery as being the problem with selecting firemodes.(no auto or bursts)

Any re-chargable batt will do you, just make sure that the Mah rating is the same or higher, if memory serves my right the Java re-chargable is 170 Mah so anything equal to or better will do fine. Standard 9v's will work for troubleshooting, but if you try playing with one it won't last near as long as a re-chargable will.

You can use other branded 9.6v batteries, but I would go against using a regular 9v for any type of playing. If you are just testing or playing around the house you should be fine. But if you are in an actual game the 9v will last way less than the 9.6.
