Could I hook two computers together with an USB cable to transfer files?

The best way to transfer files (assuming they're both desktops) would be to take the hard drive out of the one you're getting the files off of and make it a slave drive, pop it in and copy the files, then take it back out. Or if you want to transfer between the 2 without doing that I think you could use something like a crossover cable between two ethernet ports, or as you asked:

You can definitely do it that way, but you'd have to have a crossover cable, which is basically an ethernet cord that has switched ends so that it can transfer data without a hub/router/switch.
