wow what a day for the market, my real stock were down as far as 1.2% today, ending the day at .08 up... very odd, Google was up/down all day.

I need to figure out some numbers for this VSE I dont like having as much stock as I do in Exxon, they fluctuate too much, I am watching some other stocks that seem to be doing pretty good, I plan to buy as soon as they level out on the low.

Vike, buy big name stock, buy it low, sell it high. This is a good game if you are considering the stock market in real life, it helps you learn what to do and not to do with investing.

Nice, moo.

I don't really know anything about it besides the basic principle of it all. Microsoft pwned me today, I sold it and took a bit of a loss..I'm glad I did because it kept dropping all day. Google made me money but it was down?

Pharmaceuticals are really kicking, and crude oil refining/major crude oil (Exxon) was pretty good today and supposed to be getting better as well.

TheRedBarron
04-02-2007, 01:42 PM
Doc, Google went down on the day, it went up since you bought it hence the making of money.

it dropped fast this morning for some reason, my real life stock took a beating because of it, in the game I bought today when it was low, as did you I would presume, hence the reason we both made good money off from it, because in the afternoon it went back up, just did not recover fully from the dive this morning, you have to watch out for google, when it decides to dive it may not come back they have been riding a high for some time now, same goes for XOM although with the markup on oil and gasoline I do not see them dropping too far.

Ah thanks for explaining that to me then. So basically we bought it cheap, but although it fluctuated all day, we still came out better. I can't figure out this Novavax. I bought it at 3.18 and now it's down to 3.05, but it's supposedly one of the best performing stocks today? Did I just make a dumb move and buy it too soon or will it go back up? I'm lost on that one.

TheRedBarron
04-02-2007, 01:54 PM
You picked it up too high... sucks to be you, hint... I just picked up Apple, it has been low all day, apple does not stay low...

Novavax, it peaked up at around 3.25 a share you picked it up at $3.18 a share, look at the graph of the day, it peaked around that, but dropped back down to 3.05 at the end of the day, it performed well on the day really, it has been on a steady decline though over all here is the 5 day graph.

Vike I figured I would give you fair warning before the market opens, Rio Vista is a dangerous stock. if you can ride out the ups and downs find a big up and sell it, because everytime they hit a high, a big low follows...

TheRedBarron
04-02-2007, 02:05 PM
Goodluck to you, I honestly think this is the best game that has been posted here..

If you guys learn how to play the market you can make your money work for you, if you know how to play and you can regularly check it, it is safer than a bank, and makes you more money. I never suggest putting all of your money into stocks, that is just stupid, but if you play with say 1,000, lets say you invested in 2 or 3 decent companies, you have a good day and make 500 over the top, throw that back in the market, same stock, more shares, play it, keep playing what you win with, while keeping your initial investment in a safe stock, you can make yourself some good money. My vacation fund as well as my "just for fun funds" are funded by my market earnings.

I got screwed big time on Dendreon. I bought it last night and it didn't put my purchase through until 4 hours after the market opened, so I bought it when it was at its peak. If it would have purchased it when the market first opened I would have been up on the day instead of down. Oh well, glad its not my money.

Game aside, the worst thing you can do is look at your stocks on a day-to-day basis (unless you're big in the day trader segment). I couldn't tell you, off the top of my head, what any of my stocks are at at any given moment. However, every month I get my statements and make sure that my investments continue to grow.

marvin-martian
04-02-2007, 02:20 PM
red, you ever read the book rich dad, poor dad? i think you will find it interesting, although it may tell alot of things you already know. reading it will defiantly make you want to play stocks, and use other alternate forms of making money. i recommend it to anyone who wants to learn about this.

and i signed up. lets hope i learn something.

while that is true, knowing what your stock is doing for you is important, I have XOM stock, that is very day to day, although I always keep some stock, I am always buying and selling some of it, not on a day to day basis more on a week to week or war to war basis... I follow OPEC and others pretty closely because I always have the feeling that I will get burnt by this stock, watching it helps keep my mind at ease. I am in a good deal of day to day markets, I try to stray away from safe stock with an exception of my initial investments. I like to have my money doing work for me, not just earning a slow but steady penny here and there.

yes, and before you buy stock in real life you generally do more research.

Dang - I was thinking logically, but incorrectly, I guess. I figured everyone was going for the energy stock, but for the energy market to run the equipment has to go there (I have a friend who sells drill bits for oil rigs - 10,000 a pop up to 150,000.00.) Figured the equipment way was to go. Also figured for 8 bucks a share, it wasn't too bad - guess I've got a LOT to learn about this, hahaha!

Wow - reading that stuff on that site is like reading stereo instructions...TRB, do you trade your own stock, or do you have an investment guy? I know a guy here that's an investment guy, I've known him since we were kids. I've thought about going to him, but I don't know how much money I need to invest, nor do I even know where to start. I have no clue what buy low, sell high means in terms of actual dollar amounts and share numbers, and I don't even know if I should be watching this all the time, or just once in a while. It'd be cool if there was a ticker running across the bottom of my screen with just the stocks I invested in to see how they run through the day...

TheRedBarron
04-02-2007, 07:06 PM
Eh, you can try it if you would like, all I am saying is judging from the graphs and the history over the year personally I would not go into that particular stock. But if you can ride it into a nice little high point you can sell it and make a good profit considering you got in at 8 a share

Vike did you sell for a loss? :( It will be up tommorow morning I would have waited until after your first class to sell.

No, I watched it and noticed it was dead even with what I bought it at. It had been way down all morning, so I dumped 450 shares of it, keeping 50. I figured since it was equal to what I bought it for, I could dump it quick and not be out anything but the commission. As it is at the end of the day, I ended up losing 4.50 on it.

Another problem, I keep forgetting to change it from Day Trading to Until Customer Cancels. So I took a loss on those stocks that I won't be able to pick back up again tomorrow due to the loss. I'm telling ya, I really stink at this!

Equity down nearly 60000.00, 15th out of 16, cash on hand about 300.00. I just bought some Exxon, so hopefully I can make a gain tomorrow. Not a good first day! Tomorrow may get better though!

TheRedBarron
04-03-2007, 01:14 PM
Exxon... sheesh, that is a hard stock to get into if you want fast money(google is a fast money stock) , you really need to hang with exxon for it to profit you, and remember that there is a holiday this weekend and people will be traveling/buying gifts and candy. (google is a fast money stock)

Woot! Moved from 18th to 12th today (so far.) Maybe my patience is paying off?

Ok, this is a stupid question, but to actually MAKE money, you have to sell off the stock, right? So what's the point of just leaving it in there day after day?

Also, I did a day trade, by accident, on some of them. I thought it would disappear after the day was over, but it's still working? What is this about?

Like I said, I'm ignorant on this stuff - someone teach me!

durrell
04-05-2007, 08:40 AM
The point of leaving it in is to see if it will continue to make you more money, and when you think it's at its peak..sell. I screwed up last night and sold my DNDN off and it rose an entire dollar today..which shot Josh up through the rankings.

If you wish to take a totally different approach, try it now..because I'm only going to leave it on through the weekend. I did reset mine to try something new. So you guys at the bottom of the list, since this is a practice round..if you want to reset you can. Guys at the top, sorry..I figure since this is practice it's not a big deal..we need to see what all works best, and if you're already in a huge hole there's not a lot you can do..

What happened is..it opened this morning low, then went up so you bought it high 20 minutes after it opened. It was up for the day over what it opened at, but down for the day on what you bought it at..175 is a minute amount if you bought 500-1000 shares of something. :)

I check it multiple times a day. I'm pretty sure everyone does, everyone seems to be fairly active.

Reminder: In 22 days this game will be ending and a new one will be starting. I know at least me, shunut, and vike will be in..and last I heard Matt was going to be in. The next game will be a one year long game and the spending limit will be increased to 100,000 per portfolio.

Sure, I'll share my plan - in 22 days, LOL!

Basically, I took TRB's advise, bought some well known movers and shakers, got rid of my baggage (watched it for a couple of weeks and got rid of the ones who consistantly finished low) took a loss on a couple of stocks, but then ended up with some that always finished a bit higher.

I've also been reading lots and lots on investing and mutual funds and while it's still a mystery to me, at least I kind of understand what's going on a bit.

Oh, yeah, I'm in for the next one as well!

MadMan66

lol bamf. after dropping more than 5%

i say play this one out and then go for a new game. i'm still playing around with stuff as well. and figuring out what not to buy lol. i've had 99 trades, and until today was finally recovering from my last drop. i think i know what my problem is.

but let's play this one out, then start the new 1 year one. without a minimum price on stock. that's killed me. it's a little unfair to those of us who are still getting the hang of it to start the extended game already pretty far down.

vikingshadow
05-10-2007, 03:20 PM
Well, I say keep this one going. A lot of people started over in the middle of the game when D did whatever it was he did to allow it, so if they're down pretty far, then it's not for lack of opportunity. I'd hate to have to buy the same stock I have now at a higher price to start a new game.

However, this is just my opinion and if the majority votes to start over, I'll still play the game!

About a month ago I bought 2 stocks AQNT and VCLK because a guy name Jim Cramer said they were good buys and Google and/or Yahoo were going to buy them out. Well, Yahoo decided to buy someone else out and the talks of Google buying someone out disintegrated. So I sold 2 weeks ago because I was losing money. Well this morning I check out my stock ticker on Google and guess what, AQNT is up almost $28 a share! and guess who bought them, Microsoft, for $6B. I've been reading a couple of books - One is called The Smartest Investment Book You'll Ever Read by Daniel R Solin. The other is Jim Cramer's Mad Money. Both are easy reading, with lots of explanations. I've also been reading Fortune's Investor's Guide 2007 and another magazine, but I don't remember it because it's out in my car right now.

Lots of interesting information, written so that people with tired brains can comprehend quite easily. So far, by following their advice, I'm actually thinking of jumping into Investment and Mutual funds, and diversifying a bit....

I have watched Jim a lot lately, and I agree that he doesn't get them all right, for me I make a list of the stocks he suggests, then cross reference with other sources that I use in selecting stocks. I have found it to be about 80-20 after.

Oh, and there will be no private portfolios this time. ;) That was just for the first practice round so you could create your own strategy.

I think the top 3 were:

1. Me
2. Phatphil/Moo
3. Phatphil/Moo

Can't remember which one of you ended out in 2nd or 3rd but I think Taylor barely edged out moo for 2nd.

4th place today - not bad! All my stocks are making me money. Wish I had the guts, and the bank roll, to do this for real!
